The Montana Connection

With my previous film HERMANOS I travelled to Montana to film with one of my main characters and I had the opportunity of meeting Thaddeus and Nanci, with whom I fell in love immediately. Their honesty and generosity drew me to their stories.

Thaddeus invited me to experience a Northern Cheyenne sweat and then I understood what was pulling me to Montana on top of my love for human connections: I was given the opportunity to make a film on Native communities co-existing with white European settlers, which as a Mexican native, drew parallels close to my own experience. Also, the stories of their lives raise important questions over gender roles and chains of oppression which are subject matters that fascinate me and are close to my heart. As an outsider, I feel I have an objective distance that grants me a fresh perspective, which I believe will result in a more original film.
